Tiny House Care and Maintenance: What You Need to Know

How to take care of your tiny house

Proper maintenance extends the lifespan of your tiny house by decades. We’ve prepared an annual plan to help you not neglect anything important.

Spring (March–April)

  • ✓ Inspect the roof after winter – check the EPDM membrane and the aluminum composite
  • ✓ Check window and door seals
  • ✓ Inspect the chassis – rust, damaged bearings, brakes
  • ✓ Start up the water system (if it was shut down for winter)
  • ✓ Check the solar panels and the battery system

Summer (June–August)

  • ✓ Clean and treat the wood cladding (thermowood) with protective oil
  • ✓ Check the air conditioning (filter, refrigerant)
  • ✓ Inspect the electrical wiring during heavier use

Autumn (October–November)

  • ✓ Winterize the water system (drain it if the house won’t be inhabited in winter)
  • ✓ Check the insulation and seals – before winter
  • ✓ Prepare the heating (stove, air conditioning in heating mode)
  • ✓ Trailer roadworthiness test (mandatory inspection for O2/O3 vehicles)

Ongoing

  • ✓ Keeping the bathroom and kitchen drain traps clean
  • ✓ Checking the tightness of PPR piping
  • ✓ Lubricating door and window hinges

Caring for the exterior cladding

Our models use a combination of aluminum composite (Alucobond) and thermowood. The aluminum composite requires almost no maintenance – rinsing with water once a year is enough. Thermowood (thermally modified wood) is treated with UV-protective oil (e.g. Osmo Terrassen-Öl) once every 2–3 years. Untreated thermowood turns grey, but doesn’t rot.

The chassis – the most important component

For a tiny house on wheels, the steel chassis is a critical component. We recommend:

  • An annual visual inspection – look for corrosion blisters
  • Anti-corrosion coating (Dinitrol, Tectyl) every 2–3 years
  • Checking tire pressure and condition before every move
  • Lubricating the trailer’s safety pin and coupling pins

Roadworthiness test for a tiny house on wheels

A tiny house registered as O2/O3 is subject to regular technical inspection of the trailer. The frequency depends on the vehicle’s age – similar to a passenger car. We’ll provide you with information about the relevant inspection station.

Warranty service from VI invest

Under warranty, contact us directly. We cooperate with service partners across the whole Czech Republic. We provide a 5-year warranty on the structure and roof watertightness; technical equipment (air conditioning, solar controller, pump) is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty terms – generally 2–3 years.
