Self-Sufficient Off-Grid Tiny House: How to Live Without Utility Connections?

Off-grid tiny house – life without utility connections

Off-grid living in a tiny house is a real option today even during Czech winters. The key is the right combination of technologies.

Power

  • Solar panels: 5–9 × 660W panels on the tiny house roof (our models are pre-prepared for this). Output 2.6–5.9 kWp.
  • Battery storage: EcoFlow Delta Pro or Victron – capacity 2–10 kWh. Covers the night and cloudy days.
  • Backup source: A wood or pellet stove is the most reliable backup for winter heating.

Water

  • A rainwater tank (1,000–5,000 l) + filtration and UV sterilization
  • Alternatively: a well (borehole)
  • A home water pump system (hydrophore) for pressure in the plumbing

Wastewater

  • A composting toilet (Separett, Nature’s Head) – no wastewater
  • A small wastewater treatment plant for greywater
  • A cesspit – simplest, but requires regular pumping

Winter heating without a utility connection

A major concern with an off-grid tiny house is winter heating. The good news is that our models are excellently insulated (200mm EPS, 60mm PIR), and a wood or pellet stove covers 90% of winter heat consumption. Additionally, air conditioning in heat-pump mode can be installed (heating output 3–6 kW at -10°C outside).

Internet without a fixed connection

Starlink satellite internet works anywhere in the Czech Republic and Europe. Roughly CZK 1,200/month for unlimited data with 20–40 ms latency. Fully sufficient for working from home. A mobile 5G router (T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone) works as a backup.

Real customer experience

A customer with a Tiny House 9 in the Vysočina region: “Over summer, I pay practically zero for utilities. In winter I heat with the stove, heating costs about CZK 2,000/month for wood. The solar panels power everything else.” – Martina, Třebíč, user since 2023.

Cost of off-grid add-ons

A complete off-grid package (solar + battery + water tank + composting toilet): CZK 150,000 – 400,000 on top of the tiny house price.

Is off-grid right for you?

Off-grid operation works best for people who:

  • Live beyond grid reach or opt out of utility connections on principle
  • Plan a tiny house in a less accessible location (mountains, forest)
  • Are looking for maximum self-sufficiency and low operating costs

Choose a model with solar pre-preparation and consult us about the optimal setup for your location.
